Legs for Days, 2017

All of these works were made as part of my third year independent studio at the University of Waterloo.

This work explores the female body and sexuality, and how these things are mediated by clothing, particularly under garments.

Why is bridal lingerie white?

Why is men's underwear functional while women's underwear is sexual?

Why are flowers printed on underwear?

Why does women's underwear reveal the body as well as hide it?

What does the shape of our underwear say about the shape we want for our body?

To draw attention to the fragility of the fabrics used to make women's underwear, I made mine out of treated tracing paper.

Tracing paper, like lace, reveals as much as it hides.

Each piece is printed with a motif of poppies, which are a source of opium. So, poppies are toxic and intoxicating.

Legs are long and waists are tiny.

The seemingly weightless petticoat of a wedding dress tears itself apart under its own mass.

Everything is hand-sewn. Because it takes a lot of work to look this good.
